How exact age is calculated

Step 2: Borrow a month for the negative days

April (the month before May) has 30 days. Borrow those 30 days:

The person is 36 years, 1 month, and 23 days old as of May 18, 2026.

Notice that the naive "2026 − 1990 = 36 years old" happened to be correct here only because the birthday (March 25) had already passed in 2026. If the calculation were for January 2026 — before the March birthday — the person would still be 35, and the year-subtraction shortcut would be off by one.

The leap-year complication

A leap year adds February 29, making the year 366 days instead of 365. Leap years occur:
